Shards of Sanity

Growing up in a world grappling with a myriad of challenges, the intersection of mental health and societal pressures has never been more pronounced. But however I am proud to have written a poetry anthology, Shards of Sanity, which delves into the complexities of mental health, exploring the internal and external battles individuals face. This being the struggles against one’s own psyche to the societal constraints that exacerbate feelings of inadequacy. My collection aims to illuminate the multifaceted nature of mental wellness. Furthermore, it aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (5,13, 16) thus seeking to drive meaningful change in our communities.

One of the central themes of my book is the struggle within oneself. Mental health issues often manifest as a war waged silently, where individuals grapple with feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy. The poems reflect raw emotions, capturing the essence of anxiety, depression, and the relentless pursuit of self-acceptance. By articulating these experiences, the book aims to create a space where readers can confront their own mental health struggles, fostering a sense of solidarity and understanding.

Society often imposes rigid standards that can lead to feelings of isolation and despair. The pressure to conform can be overwhelming, and the fear of not being “good enough” can erode one’s self-worth. Therefore in Shards of Sanity, I explore how societal expectations can confine individuals, stifle their voices and intensify mental health issues. Through poignant imagery and evocative language, the poems serve as a critique of these societal norms, advocating for a more inclusive and compassionate understanding of mental health.

And if you dive deep into the book, you will notice that loneliness is a recurring motif in the book, highlighting how isolation can exacerbate mental health struggles. In a society that is increasingly interconnected yet paradoxically lonely, many individuals find themselves yearning for genuine connection. The poems in the first chapter of  express this profound sense of loneliness, while also offering hope for connection and healing. By sharing these experiences.

Having explored the different sub-themes within mental health, I went on to express myself on how climate change impacts on our mental health. How a simple heatwave can impact on one’s mood and in the long run leading to depression. The piece also goes on to plead with people to consider the implications of environmental degradation on our psyche. Furthermore it emphasizes the need for holistic approaches to mental wellness whilst considering environmental factors.

I am grateful to Home of Arts Entertainment, WeCre8te Afrika, Yellow World, Urban Futures, my  family and the community that helped shape me into the woman that I am today. Above all, my gratitude goes to them for the support they rendered towards making Shards of Sanity a reality.
